I'm finding it hard to get too excited for opening day, given the current conditions and the cool forecast for the rest of the week. I'll get out somewhere just for tradition's sake, but I don't have high hopes for April 1st. Good reminder about the tackle though - I'll have to dig everything out and see get things all tuned up for the season... -Croc

In 2006 we were fishing in T-shirts on opening day. Last year was frigid. Been steady cold enough up here to keep things pretty slow, although I dare say taking a minnow or worm for a swim "on-leash" might tempt some hungry trout just as they wake up! I fish for anything that I can get to with the means that I have (light canoe, good hiking boots, float tube, 12-foot alumium boat, no ATV or 4X4 or boat suitable for the ocean). I will fish trout until the mayfly hatch is over, then start moving towards stipers. Shad if they come into my spots at fly-fishing depth, otherwise I don't bother much. I dabble at smallmouth and chain pickerel a bit but not much. I'll mix those species in with late season trouting and then a bit of mackerel and pollock from shore. Might try some of this with my little boat but I'm very cautious on the salt water because I don't have much experience with that and just a 12 foot car-topper with a 4 HP on it. This year my buddy from Ireland and I are going to try his style of traditional beach fishing, but I don't know how that will pan out over here. I also got a bunch of buddies together last year to charter a boat to go out jigging a bit last summer, which was fun. Probably do that again. My highlight this year will be a chance to get to Australia in September for a few weeks. The work is all diving, but I'll be sneaking off every chance I get to fish for some bigger stuff, and if I can get my funds sorted out I'll book an extra day or two after the contract is over to charter a boat for giant trevally. I've done it before and it's the most exciting fishing I have every had. Hooked two, never landed either one of them, but my heart just about split out my chest on each hookup! -Croc

Pumped??? I'm already packed! LOL! I've got a spot on the eastern shore that I hit every April 1st for brookies. It involves a long drive and a kilometer hike, but over the years it has always been good to me. On the first day, it's usually good for a limit of 12-16" trout. I have caught them on minnows, floating rapalas in various colours, mepps spinners and 1" berkley power baits. It's been a long, cold March and I can't wait to get out and wet a line. If you're heading out, good luck!

I caught a 17" trout a few years ago, and my buddy got a pair of 18.5" beauties, but like you say, most are 10-14 inches. What a MONSTER pickerel too. If I could find them in that size class I'd be tempted to target them a bit more. I grew up fishing pike and musky so I have a hard time getting too excited about the little snot-rockets, but if you're taling 5-pound class pickere I'M IN! lol! If landing them is the problem I've got a huge selection of pike and musky gear that's just collecting dust and rust here in my basement. If you're coming to the Delta dinner let me know and I'll put together a little goody-bag for you to try on your monster pickerel lake. I had an old triton bass boat a decade ago and dabbled in some tourneys as well, but never weighed in any heavy bags in the big events so never got picked up by any serious sponsors. After sinking gawd-knows how much money I gave it up. ![](http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o116/dreamwaters/Fishing/CopyofHugePike.jpg) ![](http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o116/dreamwaters/Fishing/Copyofpikerelease.jpg) -Croc
