Delta Waterfowl Youth Hunt 2013
Well, that time of year is approaching fast. That time when we start looking a little keener to the fields, ponds, marshes and shorelines.
When we touch up the decoy paint and practice a little longer with our four legged friends.
Our excitement starts to build as the temperature drops and the leaves finally change. The opener of bird season is approaching.
That excitement can be contagious and as hunters, we are very fortunate that there seems to be resurgence in people looking to regain a
lost connection with nature and their food. Every year we are welcoming more and more hunters to our ranks, some coming back after decades
of being away and some brand new, with no family history of hunting in recent generations. But to most hunters, there is no greater joy or
reward than bringing someone new into the field and passing on to them a lifetime’s worth of knowledge and skills. As with so many things,
there is only so much that one can gain from courses and books.
There is no better teacher than being in the field with an experienced mentor.
Delta Waterfowl is an organization built by these seasoned mentors to both protect wildlife habitat, especially for waterfowl and to promote
the time honoured tradition of hunting. Part of Delta’s mandate is to support local initiatives such as the founding of new regional chapters,
like our new Truro Chapter and to mentor new hunters looking to gain access to
the rewarding pursuit of waterfowling.
The Truro Chapter of Delta Waterfowl is organizing a youth hunt, in the Truro area and is open to youth between the ages of 12 and 17. The hunt
will be held on the Waterfowl Heritage Day, which, this year falls on the 21st of September. The youth must have completed the relevant firearm
and hunter training but do not require a migratory or small game license. In Nova Scotia all you require for the Heritage Day hunt is a Wildlife
Habitat Stamp and a fully licensed mentor. The Truro Delta Chapter will provide all the necessary equipment, including ammunition and firearms
but the youth are still free to bring any of their own gear. Space is limited so contact us early. The Truro Delta Waterfowl chapter can be
reached via Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/trurodelta) or send us an email to trurodelta@gmail.com.
