What an amazing day we had yesterday! Three generations of us headed for our special Eastern Shore lake for some troutin'. It was Matthew's first trout fishing adventure and he was ready to take on the world, lol! I'd been hoping for a fair weather/bug-free Saturday and this was to be the one. My father, Matthew and I launched our ancient Sportspal canoe, rigged our minnows and cast them out. My father and I had been there the previous weekend and came home skunked. This wouldn't happen today as Matthew hooked up within 5 minutes of hitting the water. My father and I watched in amazement as Matthew fought an epic battle and brought the trout to the net. My father netted the 10" monster and there was a roar and a scream that could've been heard for miles! I'm not sure who was happier, myself or Matthew. I was so proud. No, it wasn't a giant fish and under normal circumstances, it would have been released. We generally only keep them 12" or larger but hey, it was his first trout ever AND it was hooked through he mouth and out the eye. To our delight, he hooked up again only minutes later. This was to be a better fish. It actually took drag a few times. It ended up being 13" and weighing a pound! Can you imagine? It was the thrill of a lifetime for him.
In all, we landed 9 trout and my father (with his typical giant horseshoe shoved up his...) hooked up 5 times. One of his fish was a monster trout by our standards, a gorgeous male measuring 15.5" and weighing just shy of 2 pounds! It was 2" across the back! The crazy part is, I've seen even bigger trout come out of that lake.
It was truly a day to remember. ;D ;D ;D
