Now that I'm starting to get the hang of the short reed calls.. I managed to get my hands on a few new calls in the last few months The Ivory ones are the acrylic GK Canuck / Mallard Killer The Red Pearl ones are the newly released Buck Gardner Acylics Spit Tech Spitfire Duck and a Workin' Man Honker Hammer The Chartreuse ones are an RNT Daisy Cutter and Pacific Flyway Acylics (duck and goose) I got to admit the short reeds are awesome sounding calls.. So all of my dozens of other calls are just being packed away to never see the light of day again..

Quite the variety. Why do they make these acrylic calls in such "funky" colors? I presume it is so you can distinguish between your calls quickly? With all the gear these days you can generally pick your favorite camo pattern. My favorite pattern is Advantage Max 4 HD. Seems strange to attempt blend into your surroundings so well and then blow into a fluorescent green or red call. Maybe it's just me?? Come to think of it, I have lost and spent a lot of time looking around in the past for my old wooden call or black PS Olt call that I accidentally dropped or put down somewhere to take a shot. I have shot with a call in my mouth on occasion and learned quickly that is not a good idea!! I believe the lanyards we use these days prevent a lot of lost calls!!

The flashy calls are for the hunter and nothing more.... color serves no other real purpose...all the manufactures make a varity of the same colors...
Yes the calls are bright in color but when you have your hands wrapped aroung them calling, they are covered anyway.. and when your tucked in the blind, the birds won't see them either..
As for camo.... IMO ... it's more for the hunter than the hunted.. Seriously, why do they make camo long-johns? for the hunter!!
let's look back 30 years ago at what the oldtimers used...a red plad shirt, a pair of wool pants and a stocking hat..and they harvested game..

True, I can still picture my grandfather in his red or blue flannel shirt with my Grandmas old purse as a shell bag. I remember him telling me a purse was the best thing out there for carrying your shells and call. I had one of those old crappy shell belts and I lost more shells than I fired!! He never let me live that down and said I wasted my money on that shell belt. I wish he was still around to see what we have available today, second thought maybe not. If he seen the new blind bag i'm getting I know he would say that was a waste of money and he could have built a better one for next to nothing!! If he knew what I was paying for new waders he would shoot me himself. He was one of those guys who could have bought anything he wanted, but if he could make something himself rather than buy it, he definitely would. He even bought the cheapest shells he could buy back then, I remember they even had a paper casing and somehow they stayed dry in that stupid purse!! Even with those cheap paper shells he was a better shot than I will ever be!!

WITH ADDED COMMENTARY FROM ME LOL ;D "Grandmas old purse as a shell bag. I remember him telling me a purse was the best thing out there for carrying your shells and call. " YES INDEED !!!! I CAN PICTURE CHEZZ WITH HIS LOUIS VITON (NOTHING BUT THE BEST FOR HIM") AND MR NOVA WITH HIS "FRENCHIES-$1.99 HAND BAG ON THEIR ARMS HEADING DOWN TO THEIR SPOT. LOL - TRUTH BE KNOWN I THINK THERE WOULD ALSO BE AN ARGUEMENT FOR GRANNYS DRAWERS IF THEY GOT RID OF THEIR UNDER ARMOUR. He was one of those guys who could have bought anything he wanted, but if he could make something himself rather than buy it, he definitely would. SOUNDS LIKE HE MIGHT HAVE SOME NOVA SCOTIAN IN HIM He even bought the cheapest shells he could buy back then, I remember they even had a paper casing and somehow they stayed dry in that stupid purse!! Even with those cheap paper shells he was a better shot than I will ever be!! I HAVE SOME HERE AT THE SHOP NOT FOR SALE ;D ;D YOUR GRANDAD SOUND LIKE QUITE A CHARACTER

He was!! I consider myself very fortunate that he was an avid waterfowl hunter and passed that to my Dad , down to me and I am now passing that down to my sons. The stories he told me of the ducks in the prairie pothole region of Manitoba when he was a youngster sounded unreal. It was not only a sport back then but waterfowling in the fall also provided the family with many fine meals back in the days. He died in 1989 and is buried in Baldur MB, smack dab in the middle of the pothole region. In the fall I am sure there is a rarely not a time when flocks of geese and mallards have their wings set to land in a beautiful marsh visible just beyond the cemetery. The property my brother and I own is only about 20 minutes from there. A vivid memory I have is every thanksgiving my Dad my Brother and I would go for 4 days days to Gramps hobby farm and have amazing hunts. Gramps would be up at 4 in the morning standing is his long johns frying up fresh bacon and eggs from the chickens and pigs he raised on his hobby farm after retiring as as an aircraft mechanic with Air Canada. I know how fortunate I was!! Looking back the memories I have can not even be put into words!!

Your a call whore like me!! Nice collection... I'll have to dig out all of mine to take some pics as well.. Of course I am. I'm far from done... ;D I'm not sure how many I would have. I've lost some, sold a couple, and gave away, countless of them to kids here in the US and back home in Canada.
