![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) With the weather coming tomorrow, I figured I'd nip out this morning to settle a score with some roosters. The score got settled all right - it settled right on 0-4!!!! Dammit! I've only been hunting pheasants a few years, but they seem so damned skittish this year it's crazy. I was so quiet this morning - no dog bell, no whislting, no talking. Hell, I didn't even dare fart. We even circled around and approached each obvious cover from downwind. Still, they were out of every cover by the time we got to it - Ruby was on hot scent 4 times where a bird must just have been within minutes. Finally we got to the corner of a field by the river and she was red-hot on scent, I figured I had them stacked up and prepared to shoot one over the river. NOthing - the bird must have flushed across before I got there. So I went back to the car and drove around the river to hunt that side. Ruby picked up the scent again and I figured the bird would fly back over the river for sure, so I ripped through teh alders to get on the bank ready for action. Murphy's law, the bugger ran into the alders behind me and flushed back into the woods... Finally Ruby put up a hen on the way back to the car that I could have shot if it had been a rooster (and if it had not been 50 yards from teh hosting land-owner's house). I'm at a loss - going to have to buy myself a few pheasants and tie rocks to their feet before Ruby forgets what it's all about! Ah well, beautiful morning to be out tromping around anyways (but still WTF???! lol!). -Croc

Croc, you've always got a good story anyway. I haven't been on an upland hunt all year, finally picked the 30.06 up Saturday instead of the bow and saw half a dozen or so grouse while deer hunting, 2 of them got beheaded (only ones I fired at)!!! Keep at it, your luck is bound to change, if not I'm enjoying the read!!

Glad that my frustration is giving you some amusement Sage ![:)](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v634/oldducker/kissass.gif) LOL! I'll get one of those wily bastards yet - I'm way to stubborn to give up that easy! Still, might take a little break and pick up the 30-06 myself - got this doe that that I should probably try to fill sicne I finally got one! There's some good times coming up for my Fundy mud duck hunting spot, so I might so that for a change of scene as well, then go back to those roosters! Good luck with the deer and grouse 'head-hunting'! -Croc

I'm looking forward to the end of deer season this Saturday, whether I get one or not, then shift my focus back to waterfowl. I haven't hunted Hudson in a couple weeks, he basically hates me, but he's been on antibiotics as well for a bacterial skin disease he picked up, kinda worked out for deer hunting, so I don't feel too badly.
Good luck with the roosters, looking forward to a success story!!

Poor Hudson - hope he's all straightened out by the end of deer season.
It's hilarious here - the power this friggin' dog has over me is embarassing! Each time that I say that "I think I'm going to try to fill that doe tag tomorrow" I get "the look" and cave - bird hunting it is! I've got a few weeks still to get out and try for a deer, but maybe I'll get lucky and just hit one with the car on the way to the duck blind! lol!
