Hey, I also shot a banded drake Common Eider on Dec 26/07, mine was banded in June 26/2005 in NFLD & Labrador. I think mine had a chick band on it or something, I have never seen a band like the one I got before. Our birds must have been banded by the same guy that week.

Congrats on the bands to both of you..Especially on the Drakes..
I have shot a pile of Eiders over the years and a banded Eider is one of those things that has always been elusive. Any that I know of being shot were always a very local banding, its very interesting to know that they are coming all the way from the 'Rock"

Chessieguy, you will hate me for this. The banded drake Eider came on my second ever in life sea duck hunt!!!!!! It's kind of a funny story how I got it too. We (3 of us) hunted the morning untill we limited around 10am. Our frend - guide Brian spent the better part of the hunt retrieving our birds with his dog, each bird passed through his hands. When we were packing the boat to leave I was throwing the birds in the boat & happened to notice the banded Eider! I offered the band to him, thought it might be the right thing to do but he insisted I keep it because it would be only my second band in 16 years of hunting, both this year, & he allready has 7 bands in only 5 years of hunting. I wish I new I shot it but beggers can't be choosers.

Far from it... These are all the little things the duck gods do to hook us, the banded Drake Eider is the one bird I would love to have on the wall
I think you mean Brian Donnley, if so he is a first class guy and seems to be a band magnet...
Oddly the first goose I ever shot was a banded bird, so I know how ya feel!!!

Is it rare for a bird to live the entire 30 yrs or do a large number make the distance. I shot the bird in Ottawa and was wondering if the flyway that covers Maryland covers from the Maritimes all the way past Ontario or are the Maritime birds on a different flyway?

I talked to a friend of mine who studies waterfowl. Apparently goose older than 18 years old are quite rare in the wild, but more common in captivity and among resident geese in urban environments. Any goose over 20, even in captivity, is an ancient bird in her opinion and experience.
A goose banded in Maryland is likely to have been using the Atlantic flyway, rather than the next one to the west (Mississipi flyway). You could get Mississipi flyways birds over Ottawa area though, because the flyway is very narrow at the southern extreme along the gulf but spreads across Canada as they move northwards (but because the flywas is narrower over the US, a Mississipi flyway bird is unlikely to straggle as far east as Maryland). SO, her opinion is that, when banded, this goose was using the Atlantic flyway, which is very concentrated in the area of Chesapeake Bay/Maryland, and then spreads over eastern Canada as they move northwards (definitely including the Ottawa area).
Anyhow - after she told me all this stuff I took a quick look at the two easternmost flyway maps, and you can see what she means. Looks fairly safe to say that a goose banded in Maryland and shot in Ottawa was an Atlantic flyway bird (http://www.pacificflyway.gov/Documents/Atlantic_map.pdf) not a Mississippi flyway bird (http://www.pacificflyway.gov/Documents/Mississippi_map.pdf). -Croc

How does a 14-year old goose TASTE anyway? Or I suppose that you were not able to keep track of exactly which one it was - if I remember correctly you guys did pretty well on that trip! -Croc
