The spot I had chosen to hunt this year had really slowed down and was not producing like I thought it should. Talking to other waterfowlers in MB and they also indicated it has been a very strange year??
Winds were up to 60 km's plus and it was drizzling, plus 5 but on the marsh there were occasional flurries. Head out mid afternoon, Brandon drags the boat with layout blinds etc to set up on small island and my Dad and I wade out there. We use the boat as a sort of water wagon to drag all the gear OUT! My dad lifts a layout blind out of the crawdad and is almost immediately a kite!!
I had seen very few mallards at our spot even though it looks like the ideal place, it is pasture land on the edge of a big lake that flooded years ago and bullrushes have come in etc and it looking like a mallard heaven!! The huge flocks of divers head out to the bigger water. Then it happened a hen drops in, 4 big drakes and flocks are seen everywhere battling the winds. We got beautiful mallards, 2 Canvasbacks, and a huge LONG bodied Pintail. Missed a whack of other species such as Buffle heads, Golden eyes, red heads etc. I did not think the hunting was going to be great so did not bring a whack of shells, next time I know better. It a real smorgasborg of ducks people get out there. We had unloaded and as we packed up and a few Snow geese were fighting the wind and were at an absolute stand still about 20 yards above my head. I swear I would have had time to get my gun, shells, load an it and they would have been in the same place frozen in time in that wind!!
Making some Goose jerky now to enjoy on the marsh later!! Getting down to minus 5 at night this week. A guy I have got to know in our hunting area says it could be crazy in the next week or so depending on the weather!!
