I decided to take advantage of the extended season and headed down to Lawrencetown this morning despite the -25C windchill. Lots of birds around so that kind of warmed me up for a bit. I chucked out a few mallards and blacks and hunkered down out of the wind. Imagine my surprise when the first bird that worked the decoys was a drake GWT! Didn't think they'd still be around but hey, fair game. BANG! Down he goes and out goes Jake into the c-c-c-c-cold water. Now, I've shot my share of teal but never this late in the season. This was my first drake with a black "mullet", lol! I guess their full plumage comes on later in the season. Anyway, we settled in again and not 10 minutes later, another first! MY first Widgeon dove into the spread and folded with a BANG! Jake swam out and did the deed again and by then we were numb with cold. I couldn't feel my fingers and Jake was shivering like mad. Time to pack it in. Awesome morning!

Congratulations! You guy's are so blessed to have an extended season! Here in Kent-Westmorland county NB our season ended on Dec. 18th. Make's me want to move to Nova Scotia. Beautiful picture of the teal and widgeon hanging on the fence post. It would be a nice composition for an oil painting.

We had a small flock of Widgeon come into our spread in Cole Harbour last week, bagged 2 of them, full plumage...what a beautiful bird late in the season!
