any idea what would cause a shell to do this when you pull the trigger ? after the bells stopped ringing [ actually they haven't ] this is what i pulled out of the breech of my now busted 870 supermag . Some frigging glad it's made of all metal none of that plastic crap . ohh man scares me to think what could have happened . and no the barrel was clear as i had killed a goose with the first shot and was trying for another .

I hope you sent that picture on to Kent Canada - if it was defective they would want to know. Was it an old shell? or new out of the box.

Jaysus - glad you're OK. I had a shell (same brand) blow the side out of it when it ejected before it was done burning the load (the wad must have passed the exhaust port on a slow burn and caused the action to cycle before it was done combusting). Neither the gun nor myself were hurt, but I've been shooting a different brand ever since. If I were you, I'd be going after Kent to pay for a new shotgun.

AGREED! Kent should definitely be replacing your shotgun. I've NEVER seen anything like that! Glad you're ok. Let us know what happens.

looks to me as if the shell detonated out side of the chamber like a slam fire or something like that happened. I say this just by the way the actual metal is deformed and the plastic has expanded to the point it ruptured, lead me to believe that shell was not fully locked in the chamber when the shell was set off.
Have your gun looked at by a gun smith....things like a broken firing pin could cause this if the pin stays sticking out of the bolt face when you slam the pump closed it is possible to set the shell off if it gets hung up ever so slightly on its way into the chamber. hence the term slam fire.
either that or the sear slipped just before it closed setting the shell off prematurely.
Scary situation for sure what ever happened , hope your hearing comes back as I am sure your still buzzzzzzzin' and that your gun is fine.
I'm no expert and don't claim to be but I have seen some stuff like this before mostly in rifles not so much in shotguns

Was there much damage to the gun it self< the more I look at it the more I think it was a shell fired on a unclosed bolt(check out how the brass on the shell fire formed to the open chamber as where it swelled to look like the rim that is usually on the back of the case, and that the rim is all but now gone on what is left of the case....hope that all makes sense.
as for a gun smith I know of a few but not sure of a "Remington" gun smith

Huntingike, glad to hear no one was injured. Has Kent given you any explanation as to what may have caused this? Pretty scary, this had potential of being very dangerous to you or someone else in your blind. Did they go good for your repairs?
