First off I gotta throw out a big thank you to the boys that hosted me again this year for the Ontario 2012 trip... Because of a bad work schedule I had to make the trip a little early this year but like always, it's been a blast....
This trip I had the chance to try turkey hunting for the first time and let's just say i ended up with a very cool hunt.. Gary put us about 50 yards from the roost and a little after daylight we could hear 25+ Turkey's doing the gobble show.. shortly after that things got real quiet so we decided to take a walk to see where they went after dropping out of the trees.. we walked up the field and started to cross in the woods to find them and we got busted as they all started scrambling in the next small field next to us..
So we backed out and back tracked about 200 yards and crossed thru about another 200 yards into the woods into a grown up field..turned and make the very quiet stalk to get to the edge of the field.. as we made it to about the 50 yards to go mark I spotted the gobblers feeding away amogst 3-4 does.. I got on my hands and knees and slowly crawled my way towards the field with the fresh morning sunrise glaring in my eyes and luckily a nice damp bed of leaves to mask any possible noise.. once I got to about the 15 yard mark I was to the spot I needed to be.. took a peek, seen the gobbler streatching his wings and took a bead on him.. as I was setting up for the shot, one of the does walked in between me and the target.. And as you guessed, she looked right at me and froze so I eased down to hide and didn't get busted... thankfully I had the wind to my advantage!! Finally she relaxed and eased out of the way, I took aim again and with a gentle pull of the trigger... BOOM went the 3-1/2" 1-3/8oz #5 lead load thru the Wad Wizard tube and smoked my first gobbler.. off went the deer into the woods and the other Turkey's went everywhere....
I remember hearing " Did ya get'em??"..... oh yeah!!! was my reply..
So I jumped out of the bush and ran the other 25 yards to grab my trophy...
9" beard.... 1" spurs and just over 21 lbs
