So Croc and I headed down to our early archery season honey hole despite a horrible forecast. We just had to scratch that itch and we thought perhaps the deer gods would be with us and spare us a drenching. When we woke up this morning, the radar looked uninviting to say the least but Croc braved the elements regardless. I decided to wait it out in the cottage. Off he goes after a quick breakfast, dressed for a hurricane and then some. By the warmth of the wood stove, I'm enjoying my second cup of java when my cell rings at 8:05, "I got the 4 pointer!!!" Now, knowing Croc like I do, he's just yanking my chain and this is some transparent attempt to get me out in the rain. LOL! He was very convincing though so I dressed for the weather and headed in, knowing the tracking job would have to be quick with heavier rain minutes away. When I found his bloody arrow sticking up out of the ground under his stand, I knew he wasn't feeding me a line of BS. I found him only yards away aggressively tracking a decent blood trail. I offered my congratulations but he said, and rightfully so, "We'll shake hands when we find it." Well, find it we did, not 70 yards away thanks to a near perfect lung shot. Congrats bud!!! Now, if this damn rain would stop, I could get back in there and tag the BIGGER 7 pointer. LOL!

No worries there spikemaster - with this late opener there are unlikely to be any mount-quality woodies in my cast-iron pan this fall. But you'd better believe if I see on when it's legal I'll be using small shot to preserve a perfect specimen, then I'll tuck it into a nylon stocking to keep all of it's feather's intact, then I'll lay it gently in a cooler for the drive home. Then I'll get hungry, pull it out of the stocking and flash fry the tasty little bastard with a few strips of bacon! lol lol lol! Thanks to all for the congrats. It was a no small measure of good luck that the deer that I wanted walked out opening morning and passed broadside at 14 yards, stopping when I bleated just long enough for me to make the shot! I KNEW that Take'em figured I would be bullshitting him, so it was quite amusing to see him looking at the blood-stained arrow still stuck in the dirt - if "Holy chit, he's SERIOUS" could be written on someone's face, that was it! lol! Great though to have his fast response and a second set of eyes on the blood trail to get the tracking done quick before the rain. The shot was a tad high, so the start of the blood trail was quite light. I'll fill in some details with my side of the story "from the stand" later. -Croc
