Ok everyone we are all waiting to hit the fields and waterways for the 2012 season and was just wondering what everyone has in their bag of tricks for this season. Any new gear, decoy spreads or tricks for the upcoming season!! Personally I am awaiting for my new Zink ATM double reed duck call to arrive, hopefully any day. Also have a couple of decoy spreads I am very interested in trying. I know most have been out scouting and fixing up blinds in anticipation of the openner. Interested in hearing what everyone is doing in preparation for the season!!

Boat blind: Last year I made a wooden prototype blind for my boat. LIked it, so after a few small modifications, I made one out of bent-conduit with bimini hardware for this year. Also added a GPS plotter/sonar to my boat to mark channels and spots to find in the dark, as well as an electric motor for setting dekes etc... on a separate battery. That battery has cigarette-lighter plugs on the box to plug in spotlights as well if needed. I put a cleat on fore and aft for easier tying off as well, and made a wooden gun-rest. I also picked up a very cool "Bird and Buck Sports Seat" - a very sturdy bucket seat that has good back support and a smooth swivel, lots of storage inside and a cooler-insert if needed. So the duck boat is ready to go. We only hunted in it once last year - hopefully more often this year.
Changed my mud-hunting rig to be lighter, faster and cleaner. Lots of little details there - too much to go into here, must mostly the idea is to use fewer decoys in the water (only what I can carry down cleanly in two hands and set easily = cleaner) and to incorporate a few dekes up on the bank away from the mud to try to draw birds closer to me as Ruby ages and struggles with an arthritic shoulder - hoping she makes fewer long retrieves in fast tides as a result.
I had a test-season with a new (to me) over-under (Beretta Silver Pigeon II) last fall and loved it, so I had it custom fit to me (steam-bent for left-hand and my particular measurements), put a different recoil pad on it (Pachmayr with a no-snag heel) and also had the high-gloss varnish removed and replaced with a hand-rubbed european oil finish (partly for cosmetic reasons, but also to make it a better field gun - the oil gets deeply into areas that are not covered by varnish, and also field scratches can be buffed out, unlike varnish. Grip is also better.)
That's about it for me really. Oh, I got a new cheapo deer stand and climbing sticks for a spot where theft is a risk (70$ for the whole thing - if it walks, it walks! lol!). I got a beauty new scope for the rifle that I probably won't fire this year (Bushnell Elite 6500 1.25-8x), and some new arrows that are 10.2 grams per inch - a bit heavier than what I was shooting before (like the way they fly at hunting distances, and they sure hit with authority when flung out of the PSE Brute cranked right down to 70 lbs). Oh, and n aluminum deer cart rated for 300 lbs - every the optimist! lol!
