Comments from the Pilot Biologist:
Alaska and Yukon Territory *
- Some duck numbers to be down slightly from recent years;
- Overall, was average to slightly below average.
;D Yukon/Kuskokwim Delta and the Seward Peninsula *
- Coastal zone has very high concentrations of nesting geese, ducks, and swans.
- Densities are lower in the interior of the YKD, but numbers are still high.
Northern Alberta and BC *
- Habitat conditions are generally good across this survey area. Wetlands conditions vary as winter precipitation varied across the region.
Drought Continues in the Alberta Prairie Pothole Region *
- Overall, the timing of nesting appeared to be normal.
Manitoba & SE Saskatchewan – looks good *
- Overall, the entire survey area as good and conditions vastly improved over the last several years.
Northern Saskatchewan, Northern Manitoba *
- Exposed shorelines and dry wetlands indicate only fair conditions for waterfowl in N. Saskatchewan.
Southern Saskatchewan – strange year *
- Saw fewer waterfowl overall. This could be because the habitat conditions are so good down in the Dakotas and eastern Montana
Eastern and Northern Ontario * - Tundra coast of Hudson Bay in extreme northwest Ontario largely frozen this year. - Habitats just inland in better shape.
- Most counts up from 2008; Eastern and Northern Ontario
Eastern Quebec and Anticosti Island *
- Habitats on the North Shore were wetter, but still only characterized as “fair” to “good.”
Maine and Atlantic Canada *
- Habitat conditions for breeding waterfowl were classified excellent in Maine, the Maritimes and Newfoundland, but good in Labrador.
Newfoundland – habitat excellent *
- Overall, Newfoundland’s habitat conditions were considered excellent.
- Labrador habitat conditions rated as good.
Eastern Dakotas – better than 2008 *
- Water levels and numbers of basins were generally considered good to excellent and significantly improved since 2008. Nesting cover though, is variable.
