I remember maybe 25 years ago I ordered a leash from the states along with a collar and turkey bell for my pointer, I almost paid a extra 30-40 dollars after taxes, duty, money exchange!! That always stuck in my head.

So what are some secrets to knowing how much you're going to get nailed for and avoiding the nasty charges Chezz? I remember that you told me always to INSIST on USPS and not UPS (or other courier services for that matter). Any other easy tips? I have been nailed once or twice with companies or prodects that can't go USPS, but ever since I started insisting on that it has been pretty good... The other things that I'm wondering is whether this is MPW gouging Canadian customers (?). I've never ordered from there - can always find the same thing at Cabela's same price or cheaper where I have absolute confidence tha I won't get screwed over on extra charges. Has anyone else had problems with MPW? My buddy ordered the same boat cover that I got from Cabela's from MPW a few months ago and got a nasty bill for customs/brokerage fees afterwards... -Croc

I have gotten a number of things from MPW and have no bad dealings so far, but it must be noted that they are not the people screwing us on duty and excise, that is our side of the border doing that. I made the mistake once of having UPS broker an item the item was 89 dollars the duty and all was over 110 dollars but I got a nice letter from ups telling me how they acted on my behalf to make my transaction less troublesome (ya right thanks).

I always ask the shipper to write "made in USA" on the outside of the package so the border guys don't screw up and make me pay duty when I shouldn't. Also, to have some stuff sent to me I had to sign up with a brokerage company (www.aacb.com). Prices were good, they were great to deal with and all paperwork was electronic so very fast. I haven't tried ordering a "mallard machine" to test out using my new broker but if someone wants to loan me some $$$$ I can be the guinea pig!!!!

Here was my reply
Hey Folks : Im sure this is not the first you have heard of this but $29.99 for shipping and handling on $9.99 elastic suspenders is extreme, given that the item being shipped weighs less than a pound, and can be folded in an envelope and sent via US Post for what would have to be under $10.00. I will be sure to pass this shipping information on to as many of my fellow waterfowlers as I possibly can, so they might avoid being financially raped by your shipping and handling charges. Thankyou Ed Dawson

Ed, if you need to order something from the U.S once in a while, I have an American mailing address & live 15 mins from the border, ship it to my address in Houlton, I'm over there evry week & drive by Lantz evry week. It has saved me a small fortune on shipping charges.
