Are there any papers anywhere through the pedigree? Do you have any record of their lines? Are they able to run hunt tests?
And the big Question: Can they hunt? Do you have any video or can you show the parents in a hunting situation or has anyone from here seen the parents hunt?
Lloyd, just don't want you to run into a similar situation I had with Orion. Not that he didn't turn out well in the end.

hey anthony to answer your questions i dont have any papers for either parent after that i couldnt tell ya for sure was told my yellows parents had papers but i never toke it any farther then that...see i dont belive that a set of papers make or break a good dog....sorry i know that my offend some and as for hunting my black has been hunting ducks with me since he was less then a year old he hunts well enough for a dumb ass like me training him....lolthe only troble i have with him is wanting to go after the first shot....so i tie him in the blind....thats probly more my fault from lack of knowlege when i was traning him.the next one will be better...and as far as hunt test i have no idea dont know anything about them...like i said my dogs are family pets and hunting partners ive never been involved in any of the hunt test other then oct 1st to dec 31 every year for the last 6 years hope this answers your questions

Hunt tests that are CKC regognized ask for a CKC reg # or equivelent.
My idea of a hunt test comes from the end of my gun! He brings the goose back hes a champ- and like Just Ducky said - dog smarts start with their owners

Hunt tests are a great training tool, it gives great variety on retrieves and gives a good opportunity to see how a dog will handle with other dogs.
And in another view the titles earned means + $$$ if you're breeding because you have concrete proof the dog can hunt.
Plus it's alot of fun and the other people can help you out with any questions you may have.

i agree with ya they probly are great for traning and they do mean big bucks for puppies from champion dogs ...ive just never been a competive person and like ed said if my dog brings me the danm duck or goose back im the happiest man around ive seen my dog take back a goose one day that i figured was a lost cause was down off a point one fine hunting day...lol...blowing a gail rain mixed with snow and in comes a flock of geese low to the water they pull up just befor they reach the sandy point that im sitting on,still well with in gun range shot 1 first goose falls the flock does a quick turn now they have a really strong wind at their back shot 2 second goose falls flocks now to far away 3 shot stays in the gun now i take a quick look and the first goos i shot down was still swimming 3rd shot still swimming away send the dog reload the 2nd goos is white side up moving away quicker then the one swimming with the wind and the out going tide, but Hunters already on to of the very much alive goose and is "in hot pursuit"cant take another shot will have to let him do his thing.aways out he catches the bird and takes it back...now goose 2 is just a small white speck that i can only see when it hits the top of the waves Hunter has some trouble picking up on where it is i stand there with him on the shore and help him pick it up when it crest the top of the waves i know he sees it when his ears drop and tell him to go get it.Man i was starting to worry once he got out aways when i could see the goose barly then see a black speck bobbing in the wavesand i mean waves...white caps he was along ways out now with the goose in his mouth ...he makes the long swim back with waves breaking over him the whole way....he comes to shore drops the goose and caughs out a bunch of water the look on his face was like"man that was ruff"and i know the thought had come in my mind that he may not make it back and i probly shouldnt have sent him. well needles to say he had some extra treats when we go home and i was so proud of him. if thats not a hunt test i dont know what is ....sorry it was so long winded

But it's not really a competition, it's to test the dogs hunting ability as well as the handlers training ability.
I never even heard of them before I got Orion. I went to watch a few and they look fun. Orion would never make it passed a junior hunter title if I ever ran him but like you say he does great in the blind.
My next dog though will be from all hunting lines and hopefully he will turn out well enough to run him in tests. I've learned from a lot of mistakes I made while training him and hopefully learned from them.

+ $$$ if you're breeding because you have concrete proof the dog can hunt. . I have to say I have a wee exception to this part of the statement Anthony. Field trails stroke egos and as you say drive $ up. A mark of a true hunting retriever dog is his drive and determination .The finesse of obedience is the owner/handelers job. It seems the more people get involved with trials and the politics of shows the more bizzare and further removed from an actual real hunt situation it seems to become. Thankfully that was one aspect of the Dog and pony show I stayed away from. (My opinion only folks) I appreciate the company of my dog while hunting and the fact he brings ducks back is an added bonus. To me this is how I define a champion

our current dog's name is bear,he is a pure German Shepard. we owned his father, ranger until his hips went while breeding and he had to be put down. he was mounted and was hit by another dog, as we were in the hospital having our daughter i didn't know that he was hurt and the ass that had him never took him to the vet. any way thats another story. a sad one. (bear with me there is a point). ranger was an exceptional dog, trained to the hilt, he would even retrieve anything that i asked, anything. bear (his son) is an idiot... a great dog but an idiot (lol) the difference between the two dogs is the time i devoted to training them. i guess the point is that all dogs have great potential and you have to develop it. i don't care about papers and tests as much as others but with our new pup i will need alot of help (Anthony) to train her and develop her into a great hunter. so i look forward to asking you fellers what know in the coming months how to. great site and thanks in advance. Lloyd Blagdon.

I have a DVD Video that I would highly Recommend called "Waterdog" Cabellas carries it as well as any of the major dog hunting supply outlets. It takes you from puppy to full blown duck retrieving machine gets a ***** 5 star rating
