Thanks everyone, I thought it was all over for Drake last Thursday evening, he went out in the yard and collapsed. We go him in the car and to the vet for yet another emergency call. After XRAYS, ULTTRASOUNDS and some other tests, it was determined he has a growth in his bladder that blocks him from totally emptying it. After some tests and consultations from the vet college it is what they think is a bloodclot. No signs of Cancer. We had to wait all weekend for results and were resigned that Monday was his last day with us. He is now a rack of bones and we catheritized him 2x on the weekend and he would not even lift his head. Anyone who knows chessies will understand just how sick he is. He is back on his feet again, and everything thing else is looking promising. He even growled at me last night(first time in a long time) I can tell you one thing he is one tough SOB, I think I would have packed it in long ago, he looks like a rack of bones, but all the tests for his platelets are looking excellent, so it is just to get him off the freaking drugs and we hope he will be OK. And if this keeps up I will not need a dog because I will be selling my huntung gear to fund the vet. LOL On Friday when the vet said" I wish I had answers for you, my response was not pleasant , something to the effect of that's ok after more than 5 grand I wouldn't expect you to have an answer, after all what you do is called " practice" and after 30 years looks like you need some more!!!!! He didn't like but then again I felt it needed to be said. I honestly think they have no concept of what that kind of unplanned expense can do to someone's finances, or they have so much they have no concept of it being anything less than pocket change. It is about getting the dog well, but at some point they need to understand it does not grow on trees

Update. Hope I am not jinxing the situation but the ole boy is making some progress. The less and less prednosone he gets, the better he seems to be. Even took a sandal and cowered overit growling yesterday, nice to see the old Drake coming through. He still has a long way to go, but there seems to be some light in the tunnel after all.

Everytime I see a post has been made to this thread I nervously open it hoping for the best and thankfully that seems to be the case more and more.

Update , Drake seems to be getting out of the weeds, bloodwork was very positive again today, so we are continuing to wean him off the meds. He still has a long road to be back where he was, but all signs are looking promising. We have been given the greren light to give him some very light exercise to at least halt the muscle loss that he has experienced. Hopefully we have no more setbacks.
Thanks for the support

Excellent news on Drake...still a long way to go but it's in the right direction.
A question if I may..we all know vets are expensive and i'm wondering roughly what the expense has been so far. Also if you don't have insurance, is it something you would think of getting in the future. The reason I ask is that I have Tank insured which costs a little under 500.00 a year and I know how easy it is to burn 5 bills at the vets office...hell some people pay more then that on their cell phone for a year...
You know Ed this might make a good pro/con and experiences/better companies, maximum paid out vet bill...etc..thread..
Not sure if it has already been done...but i have a couple stories I could add..

Been a while and my appologies for note being online and putting up an update, but we seem to be on the right road finally. His blood platlets are above 400K which is excellent and we are gtting him weaned off the drugs. It appears to me that the drugs are the cause of all the symptoms and although he still gets only 1/8 of what he was getting you can see the effect within an hour of giving it to him. Skyrat, as to insurance, no we do not have any on either of the dogs and it would have been nice if they covered it. I have heard several stories of getting turned down to this reason and that and people saying that it is a waste as they never pay. As to total costs we have so far, just to depress me I added it up last week and we are currently just over 5300.00 and we have 3 months until he is completely weaned off the drugs. Not bad at this pont as we are only visiting the vet once a month. So as they say we are keeping our fingers crossed, he has gained back some of the lost weight, but the muscle is far from back, and he is still not normal and active(still really sluggish) but better than what he was. I expect that he has the energy to bite me at this point, LOL

Hopefully a last update on Drake, He is doing great, we are back exercising and getting some of the fat off and muscle back. He is still on prednosone, but only 5mg every 2nd day, versus the 100MG he was on daily when we started this. He is due for a final checkup and off all meds in 2 weeks. As an update to how he is feeling, he did bite me yesterday for stumbling over him, or just for all the shit I have puthim through, Not sure the real reason, but I got bit and he got a punch in the head. So I have a sore stomach and right hand. Chessie's gotta love em!!

Good for you and the effort that you put in to Your Dog. I told my son when he bought a pup last year and it was $900 .He said as we loaded the Pups in the Car (yes I bough won also) well that was the Hard part paying for the Pup. I told him the Expenses of owning a Dog especially a hunting Dog Had Just Begone. 18 months later, now he knows and so do you, Glad your Dog is getting Well!

I kow it has been a while without an update, but yesterday the bloodwork came back perfect for Drake. It seems like he beat this thing. When we had him in for his annual shots the vet determined not to give him this years based on what he had been through and she belives from what she has read and experienced, that we may be over vacinating pets. She went as far as to question if his whole issue could not have been caused by it. Additionally we have a 9 year old Toller and she said " if after 8 years of vacines she doesn't have immunity to rabies, she never will" and signed off on the sheet as protected. Has anyone also had the same experience?
