Do you plan on using a whistle and if so have you introduced it yet?

Yes I will be using a whistle, I have been doing the basics with whistle commands already, I will soon be adding hand commands as well.
Currently I will not be putting any structure into the retrieveing part of my training, it will be all fun till 6 months.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I learned a lesson from Orion. I started a structuring retrieving drills way too early and he absolutly HATED retrieving drills, so I want her addicted like crack before I start hammering down on things.

Good plan Anth. My guess is that if you keep sessions short and frequent, quitting each session on a success and while she still wants more, she'll be the hard-driving gun-dog of your dreams. Vids don't work for me for some reason, not sure if anyone else is having the same trouble. -Croc

You can still have structured fun with emphasis on obedient commands. There will be times where she won't want to retrieve and that's basically an age issue..that's when you have to be mellow put the bumpers away and try again tomorrow.
Other things I like to introduce early on is noise, crate training and feathers. But that's just me..
But looks good so far.. )

You can still have structured fun with emphasis on obedient commands. quote] I totaly agree, BUT If obiedence is tought seperate from retrieving, it can be naturally added in at a later date (if necessary, she is putting some of it together herself). Like sitting, I am not reinforcing stay (steady on the mark) yet because I dont want to discourage her from making the retrieve. All that can be brought in after the 6 month mark. I will however make sure her butt hits the ground for a sit before I make the throw and already she has put that together so reinforcing stay (steady on mark) will be an off branch of that action when I start building a stucture after 6 months. She has been introduced to feathers already with outstanding results. Hiding pheasant wings and getting her to "hunt it up". Retrieving full frozen ducks. I am quite impressed with how soft mouthed she is. I have not seen any signs of wanting to shred feathers to date. Crate training was day one at home. As for noise, day 1 and then on was a cap gun over her head during feeding time. Then 2 weeks ago she was introduced to 12 ga gunfire at the club with no issues. She was sitting right beside the shooters by the time we left.

Se is looking good Anthony, remember keep it fun and she will love it. I agree obedience is very important and should be worked on throughout her developement and it will all come together. One note for her is to take your white bumber and take some black electrical tape and give it a few raps to give it some flash to help her pick it up when thrown. Another thing I work on with a young pup as you are doing is using the missed retrieves as a "hunt it up exercise" is to do a criscross pattern when walking with her when hunting it up as later it will be a usefull lesson. Love seeing the updates as I am sure everyone else does.

What a great weekend. We all headed to Lunenburg into some great weather. We took the dogs to the beach to see what Skye would do.
SHe headed straight for the water and of coarse as all pups do the fist time at salt water, she tried to drink it. It didn't taste to good.
I had her doing some retrieves on the beach and then started throwing them in the shallows. She was having a ball!
Then I tossed one out a little further. She charged out leaping throgh the water until... oops no more bottom. She resurfaced paddling with all her might and stood in the shallows whining at the stick I just through. All it took was for Orion to start out after it and off she went swimming for all she was worth.
We played around some more and her confidence kept building. I stopped afet she started shivering sitting at heal.
It was a great first swimming day.

Skye Training update!
She is an absolute nut for retrieving. After 2 weeks of no activity because of being spayed. Friday we got the word she was good to go full tilt and holy shit was she crazy. After a few fun bumpers to try and wind her down a little I started holding her back with her collar and she was so beside herself that she nipped me twice to try and get loose to make the retrieve.
On a normal day...
She is now collar conditioned and come, sit, stay is clockwork on all hand, whistle and voice commands. she is steady at the line as she can be right now. She needs reminders of and on but it is coming.
I am about to start force hold/fetch. I had done one session prior to spaying but wasn't able to continue through because she had too much energy and she couldn't focus. The one session went very well. 5 minutes she was holding without dropping, so I think this will come quickly once I commit to it.
I am soon going to need some duck/pheasant wings. If anyone has any they can spare I would appreciate it, I have a few but they are coming to the end of their life.
I am really excited about getting her out this fall. It is going to be a differnt pace than Orion!

She looks to be doing amazing, should be more then ready to rock come the fall. The first time she snow plows a goose that's making a break for it after being grounded at top speed like she does on those bumpers will be great to see. Again good job on the training

Anthony, she is working great, sounds like you are happy with her drive and work. Just to let everyone know Skye has some brothers and sisters ready to go in 2.5 weeks all yellows.
