MAN - Is the room spinning? I feel like The Big Lebowski here!!! Maybe it's time to take a break from the spray paint! Here's some updates on my progress with my boat. I printed a bunch of things that I found on line and experimented with some paper stencils before settling on a combination, which I cut out of thin but strong Mylar drafting paper from an art store. Unfortunatly I forgot to take a picture of the insdie of the boat when I got her, but imagine flaking, patchy baby-blue paint satured with oil/gas stains at the stern. This took an entire weekend of sanding, scraping, wire-brushing and cleaning to prepare the boat. Then I gave the entire hull a light sanding with 220 grit, washed it, then scrubbed the whole thing with Tri-Sodium-Phosphate, rinsed it again, let it dry, then went to town... First the primer went on: Then the horizontal "bark" pattern; Then the vertical black "bark" pattern: Don't ask me why I used two bark patterns in opposite directions. All that I can say is that when I tried to duplicate "Shadowgrass", which just has the vertical black "bark", it looked OK but also looked like it would stand out on water. I decided that I needed some horizontal pattern on there to match the ripples etc... in the water, so I added the brown bark and liked it better. Then I start with the grass stencil. First with an olive, which is hard to see, but aslo adds a nice background before the tan grass goes on. Again, in my tests beforehand there was too much "grey" primer behind the tan grass, so I added the olive. Like I said - the olive is subtle alone The tan grass really stands out I'm still working on the inside, but here's the final product on the outside "Crockett Max-4 Feather-Duster"! lol! Still working on some accessories, but that's what she's gonna look like! -Croc

Great job on the paint. Are these factory stencils that you used or are they of your own concoction. They look awesome. If you bought these stencils where did you get them and if you made them how much would you charge for the set that you used? Great job!

The stencils are home-made. I printed a bunch of stuff off of google, and with the help of the wife (who's done this kinda arts-and-crafts stuff before) and some trial-and-error (heavy on the "error") I came up with a few patterns that held up well and combined nicely. I tested them with newsprint and when I had finalized them I cut them out of mylar drafting paper from Loomis art store (cheap). I started with an exacto-knife but it dulled the blades like crazy, so I change to a fine utility knife with snap-off blades - much better. -Croc

Finally got out for a maiden voyage in my new little boat. I wanted to test it once under totally safe conditions before heading out in the dark for a duck hunt. If theer's going to be problems I'd rather know about them on a nice afternoon on Grand Lake than at 5 in the morning in a saltwater inlet somewhere... Loading and unloading was easy alone both at home and at the lake - those transom wheels were worth every penny! The boat is a little bit tippier than I would have liked, but it's as big as I can fit on my car just now so I'll have to learn to live with that. For one thing it's not the kind of boat you can stand up to shoot in, that's for sure. I also don't know how it's going to work with Ruby. She'll jump out no problem but getting her back in might be tricky. I had planned to just lift her in by the vest but that would require a lot of weight on one side of the boat - no good. I guess if I rig some kind of a ladder for her and teach her to use it I could lean the other way when she gets in. Ruby loved the freedom to be able to skip around in there as much as she wanted wihtout getting yelled at like she does when we're in the canoe. The motor runs like a top and pushed the boat along very nicely with the wife, dog and myself. Overall, I'm very happy with it! Now - to get it out for a hunt.......

Nice lookin Boat Croc
Have you considered a set of fold out stabilizers for when you get anchored..A couple pieces of 6" ABS pipe capped on the ends that fold out from the boat when anchored and fold up to the sides of the boat when cruising and that fold right inside the boat for transport..

Hmmmmm, hadn't thought about that before. The only issue that I can see is the last part - fold inside for transport. Right now, everything that goes with the boat (lights, flooring, seat, blind) come off easily for transport, to make the boat as easy as possible to getonto the roof of the car. So, the only modification that would have to be made to your stabilizer design would be that they'd have to come right off for transport and fit inside the car. Also, they'd have to be not too big, because once I got all that stuff inside the car I'm going to be hard pressed to jam in decoys, especially if I add my small goose spread to the pile! I think for this year I'll just have to be careful with the tippiness... -Croc

hey Croc she looks good I have been hunting out of a 1979 Espano 12ft for the last 14 years with exception of a few pin holes in the stern she is tight as a misers ass. excellent paint job. can't say I ever had paint issues with mine just went to local hardware store picked up a ( Latex)gallon of brown or olive drab and then a few toll painting spray kits and went to it. She needs a few touch ups every season but if you hunt on on the sand flats a drag her over rocks she will get dinged up.

Shermie - that looks great! I especially like that there are not sharp edges - some of the expensive ones from Cabelas etc... have clamps and stuff sticking off the top that look like they could rip your dog's belly out ont the way over!!!
Unfortunately I don't have the skills or equipment to weld, but I'll keep an eye out for a chair and then take it from there.
