If the dog is ready, I'd say get it ASAP.. You can train this time of year just as easy as the summer IMO.. You can work on the basics just playing in the living room or basement..Start with the basics first and keep the sessions short and progressivly get longer and more in depth..come spring time, the dog will be ready to start the bigger stuff..Remember, the pup is what it is ..a pup..lots of praise and patience..

Make sure the pup is at least 7 weeks old before taking it from it's litter mates for socialization issues.
A good thing also to look for is a breeder who has introduced the basics of house training. This will save loads of problems and messes in you home.
Really consider crate training, it is a great way to start the pup off right.

Also thanks for the offer if I need help with the training.

Seeing another post reminded me that no one mentioned a poodle. Does anyone know of a hunting poodle. I have a Friend who's wife is allergic and this is really the only breed they can have. We make fun about it, but I would love to see a good poodle work.

The poodle is a field dog and will do the job. I was seeing an article where a guy has a white one and he retrieves Snow geese. Great cammo!

Still got my buddy's lab with the leg surgery. They shaved her from her hip down and cut her open, sawed off the leg bone right below the knee, turned it several degrees and bolted it back on with a metal plate and 4 screws, then put her back together with 23 staples. Between this and her scar from her first (failed) surgery as a pup she looks like Frankenstein - all scars and staples mixed into a mosaic of dried blood and iodine. The point is, imagine how you would feel if someone cut your leff off, sun it, and bolted it back on. You would be in bed on pain killers and wouldn't THINK about walking for a month. A lab's reaction (without pain killers) = "I'm ready to go - where's the ducks???". Unbelieveable! We had to put down some old carpet throughout the house between her crate and the front door so that she can't slip and re-injure, and I have to keep her on one of those "prong collars" that digs into her neck if she pulls or if I need to control her. It's quite a chore to get her out for a bathroom break and to keep her calm when she doesn't seem to notice that she's just had this major trauma! Tough doesn't even begin to describe this animals - no wonder they don't take much notice when they get cut up or banged around in the field - those little nicks and dents are child's play compared to this! Of course, throuhg all this we have to keep her apart from my dog, who is a little depressed about being shut out of the livingroom all of the time, but I'm making up for it with extra long play/training sessions (despite the fact that I'm freezing my ass off to do so!). Oh well, she goes in to have her staples out on Monday and then will be shipped home to NFLD as long as the vet says OK. I'll miss the little meatball, but I'll also be happy to have my life back! Here's hoping that none of us ever have to go through this with our own dogs - it's expensive, hard work, and heartbreaking!

Madmac this time of year poses some issues with training but there are a number of us on the site that are going thru the process you will be heading thru when you get your pup feel free to ask everyone here has been great with advice. I was at a breeders house in Dartmouth on Friday he has a new litter of 7 chocs one male the rest all females (a bit of an oddity) I almost picked one out but figured the cost would be to great as another lab puppy would spell divorce, one 7 month old puppy in the house is enough. I have the Waterdog DVD thanks to another site member and if you want I can get it copied for ya.

Newguy - I'd guess that's the breeder where my dog and the one in my care come from. I know the bitch - nice animal in the field and the house. Madmac - I agree about the puppy training. Don't be afraid to post here, as many of us have been through it. We got Ruby in February in the middle of some very cold weather for the first month of her life with us. To be honest - this was harder on us than on her - she didn't mind all that much although we'd be FREEZING out there waiting, treats in hand, to reward her for crapping outside! C'MON PUPPY, WILL YOU CRAP FOR CRHIST'S SAKE! lol
